Recipe | Traditional Ancestor Spiritual Cakes

Ready in 20 minutes

Serves 8 - 10 people

Prepare enough ingredients to make about 20 silver dollar pancake-sized Ancestral cakes.

Ingredients

  • Millet flour

  • Cornmeal flour

  • Wheat flour

  • Water or milk

  • Honey

  • Pinch of salt

Preparation

  1. Get your oil into a pan ready to cook the Ancestral cakes.

  2. Mix the millet flour, cornmeal flour, wheat flour, and a pinch of salt in a bowl with your right middle finger in a counterclockwise motion to infuse your energy into the cakes.

  3. Slowly add water or milk stirring with your right middle finger in a counterclockwise motion until the mixture is similar to pancake batter.

  4. Use a ¼ cup measuring spoon to pour the mixture into the pan and let the cakes cook on one side until they are finished and ready to be taken out. (They should be less fluffy than a pancake but not too watery.)

  5. Once you have made about 20, take 7 or 9 of the cakes and put them onto your Ancestor plate and add honey on top of them. Spread the honey on them with your right middle finger to add more of your energy. (Remember that this energetic aspect of the food is what the Ancestors are consuming when they receive the offering.) Add honey to  the remaining cakes in the same way.

Prepare a cup of something to drink (milk or water) for the Ancestors and put that on the plate or bring it to the altar with the plate as well.

Greet the Ancestors

Bring the offering to your Ancestor altar, getting down on your knees to present the offering and set it down on or in front of the altar saying:

“Greetings to all of my Ancestors, this is _____ the son/daughter of ______. I am bringing this ______ (state what you are offering) to you on your market day, as this is the day I feed all of you, my Ancestors. May it strengthen and feed your spirit and may you support me in life.”

Now you will begin calling on your ancestors and proceed with your regular spiritual practice.

When you are finished with your spiritual practice, partake of the remaining spiritual cakes and share with your family and friends in your home.
